Itinerary -


Day 1 : Darjeeling - Manebhanjan – Kalapokhari (Drive / 4 - 5 hrs)

Board your vehicles to reach Manebhanjan which will take you an hour. From here you board the 4x4 Land Rovers which have been here since 1940s. Climbing up at a steep and rugged terrain you will reach the homestay at Kalapokhari. This offroad drive is an adventurous one, as the machine takes you atop a fine hill with a black alpine lake situated at Nepal border. Overnight stay in the hotel /guesthouse/ homestay.

Day 2 : Kalapokhari – Sandakphu - Manebhanjan – Darjeeling (Drive / 6-7 hrs approx.)

Wake up early to catch a striking view of 4 highest peaks in the world; at the horizon, illuminated by the twilight of a rising sun; what you witness is one of the best sunrises in the country. From here you drive to the top of the mountain and reach Sandakphu, the highest point of West Bengal. Admire some rare moments and a scrumptious meal before driving back to Manebhanjan, from where you drive to the beautiful town of Darjeeling. Overnight stay in the hotel.

Day 3 : Darjeeling – Gangtok (Drive / 3 - 3.5 hrs)

Today is the day of exploration. You will set off for a delightful drive from Darjeeling to Gangtok. On reaching, Gangtok in the afternoon, relax for a while. In the evening indulge in sightseeing , explore in and around Gangtok. Overnight stay in the hotel.

Day 4 : Gangtok - Nathu La - Gangtok (Drive 4 hrs / Full Day Trip)

Today you will retrace the old silk route and drive upto the magnificent altitudes of Nathu La. The road moves through varied terrains and landscapes, crossing over the tree line of the Sikkim Himalayas and reaches atop a 4130 m pass connecting Indian state of Sikkim with Tibet. Spend some time at the pass and drive to Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir, on the way you can buy some Chinese goods, as this is the major spot for trade between the two countries. Further you drive back to Gangtok. Overnight stay in the hotel.

Day 5 : Gangtok - Lachen (Drive / 7-8 hrs)

The drive starts early in the morning, though the distance is just 150 kms, the sporadic mountain roads demands the journey more time than usual. The journey moves through various beautiful mountain villages. Today’s destination is a small ancient Tibetan village sitting atop far out ranges, inhibited by the people who fled Tibet during the course of a few centuries. Evening at leisure. Overnight stay in the guesthouse/ hotel.

Day 6 : Lachen - Gurudongmar Lake -  Lachung (Drive / 8 hrs)

Start early around 4 to reach this amazing frozen lake at an altitude of 5400 m. the road moves around the India China border which is pretty much broken, so an adventure instinct is a mandatory. 82 kms of off road and you enter a cold dessert heavily guarded by the army, which makes it possible to drive to this wonder of nature. Spend some time at the lake keeping in mind to drink a lot of water as altitude might get your nerves. Later drive back to Lachen and post lunch get transferred to the twin village of Lachung. Spend the night at a beautiful mountain lodge/ hotel.

Day 7 : Lachung - Yumthang Valley - Lachung (Drive / 5 hrs)

This morning drive to the beautiful valley of flowers at Yumthang. A small 2 hr drive through a protected forest of a rhododendron sanctuary, you will reach these amazing grasslands of Yumthang valley, grazed by the wild horses and yaks throughout the season, before it gets covered in snow for another 8 months or so. The right season to witness the flowers would be the monsoons, but it gets hard to make the journey as the road gets blocked during the season. Spend some rare moments here before driving back to Lachung. Overnight stay in the lodge/ hotel.

Day 8 : Lachung - Gangtok (Drive / 7 - 8 hrs)

Start early to beat the traffic and trace the road back to Gangtok. Spend the evening at leisure. Overnight stay in the hotel.

Day 9 : Fly out

Post breakfast, trip ends, depart for onward destinations.

Transport Options (Delhi –Shimla– Delhi)

For travel from Delhi to Shimla one can choose between air, rail & road. For air travel, the closest airport is the Chandigarh Airport and is well connected to Delhi and other parts of the country by Air India, Jet Airways & Spice Jet. Train travel is highly recommended with enough options being there. For train details, you could log on to www.indianrail.gov.in and for online railway ticket bookings you could log on to www.irctc.co.in .
There are frequent Public Transport buses including Volvos available from Delhi to Chandigarh. They take about 5 hrs to cover the distance. From Delhi there are Volvos available for Shimla. Also there is frequent service of buses from Chandigarh to Shimla. A private vehicle could also be arranged for if you require the same.


Weather Details

The temperature in the months of September and October in Sikkim ranges between 15 °C to 20 °C, this period is considered as a great time to visit this place. Summer season that starts in May and lasts till June, is also the best time to journey to Sikkim. Featuring a pleasant climate & clear skies, this season offers lovely views of snow clad peaks. The temperature during summer varies between 20°C to 27°C.

Description

This is the idea of an amazing road journey covering great distances and visiting far out places of India. There are places you can only reach on foot similarly there are places that can only be reached on a motor vehicle. In this amazing journey you will travel in a time machine, a 1950s land rover, and retrace the old beaten horse route developed by the British authorities during their reign. Starting from the small town called Manebhanjan, a 32 km bumpy ride takes you on top on the highest point in W. Bengal. It is from here you get an amazing panorama of four of the tallest peaks in the world i.e. Mt. Everest 8848 m, Lhotse 8516 m, Kangchenjunga 8586 m and Makalu 8485 m. The view from Sandakphu top is considered one of the best.

By the time you get back to Manebhanjan, it might get hard to imagine something any better than; what you experienced up there, been said that, the next part of this amazing road journey will blow your sense of wonder away, as your headed for a vast cold dessert towards China- India border. From Manebhanjan you will drive down to Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim from where you will drive up to the magnificent heights of Nathu La pass (4310 m), Tsomgo Lake (3780 m), Gurudongmar Lake (5136 m), and Yumthang Valley of Flower (3564 m), and the twin cities of Lachen and Lachung, covering East and North Sikkim.

Gurudongmar, which remains frozen most part of the year, is a magnificent high altitude glacial lake and is of great spiritual significance for the locals. The drive to the lake is rather bumpy with a lot of off road sections, but the landscape through which you are driving makes it rather intimidating. You cross the tree line and the meadows and enter a vast cold dessert stretching into the horizon; this is the place where India meets China. Spend some rare moments before setting forth on your journey, tonight you rest at Lachung, a growing; valley town hovered by a black giant mountain in shape of a snake. Lachung forms the base for the journey to Yumthang valley, popularly known as 'Valley of Flowers'. Falling under the territory to the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, it is home to over twenty-four different species of this state flower.
